One thing that makes sheds the go-to option is their versatility. Whether it’s for storage, workshop, or entertainment, one can work. Among the many possibilities is a pool shed, which this guide will explain, along with some ideas for inspiration.
What Is a Pool Shed?
A pool shed is a garden room built or placed close to the swimming pool and used for various purposes. It can be free-standing or attached to the main building, like your house, depending on the space available and the design you prefer. One could be a shaded spot where swimmers can take breaks, or a changing room or a shower area, to name a few.
Basically, instead of a full pool house (which could be used to shelter the entire pool), you use a garden shed as a storage unit for pool equipment and as a swimmer’s shelter.
And if you need one, here are some options and things to consider.
The Best Materials for Pool Sheds
Wood, metal, and plastic are the most common materials for shed construction. Since a pool shed will likely be exposed to moisture, you’ll want one that is durable and resistant to water damage.
Pressure-treated shed for wooden sheds
There’s a big difference between untreated and treated wooden sheds, and the latter always has the upper hand. Pressure-treated sheds undergo a special treatment that resists moisture and decay. Not only that, but this also guarantees a longer lifespan with little maintenance.
However, even with pressure treatment, the building will last much longer if you keep the interior dry. If you have water pumps or wet swimmers in your shed, you will want to waterproof the floor, and make sure the building is ventilated enough to dry out.
Verdict: A wooden shed is durable enough to be used as a pool house, as long as you keep it dry. If you’re interested, check out our range of pressure treated sheds—some come as standard, while others are optional upgrades.
Galvanised steel or aluminium for metal sheds
Metal sheds are waterproof, and therefore can make excellent pool sheds, especially those made of galvanised steel.
Galvanised steel is coated with a layer of zinc, which adds extra protection to the surface against moisture and oxygen. Meanwhile, aluminium is a natural rust-resistant metal, forming a thin oxide layer when exposed to air, which protects it from further corrosion.
The only flaws of metal sheds for pools are that damage to the coating could lead to rust, and they do become hot inside during the summer.
Verdict: Both metal shed options work for pool sheds because 1.) galvanisation is a barrier against rust when the structure is exposed to moisture and pool chemicals, and 2.) aluminium’s natural resistance makes it perfect for humid, chlorine-rich environments.

To give you an idea, take a look at our BillyOh Centro Pent Metal Shed. It’s made from hot-dipped & galvanised steel panels and frame. What makes it even better for a pool house is the clear skylight, flexible and openable PC window, which helps with ventilation to help keep the building dry.
PVC or resin for plastic sheds
Today’s plastic sheds are waterproof and don’t require treatment like wood or metal. They’re also low maintenance, making them a great option for a pool house, as they won’t rust or rot in humid conditions.
However, you’ll need to choose UV-resistant types to prevent fading—polypropylene (PP), PVC and resin are good options. A unit with good ventilation is also worth considering to prevent heat and moisture build-up inside.

Our BillyOh Stafford Pent White Plastic Shed is an excellent example. It’s built with PP exterior panels paired with an aluminium frame. The built-in ventilation and skylights allow for continuous airflow while keeping the space bright and airy.
Pool Shed Ideas
Once your pool shed is set up, any of these can turn your outdoor space into a private oasis:
Pool changing shed
This idea is basically a shed by the pool where you can get changed in privacy. It saves you from running into the main house dripping wet. With cabinets, wall hooks, or shelves, you can also keep towels, spare swimsuits, dry clothes, sunblock, and other essentials nearby.
Tip: Opt for rubber matting or waterproof vinyl for flooring as it helps prevent slipping and keeps it dry.
Poolside bar shed
This one’s for you if you love having friends over in the summer. No more trekking back and forth to the kitchen, and your guests can have a laid-back drink after a swim.
Add a bar counter, like the BillyOh Nightjar, to prep the drinks and use as a table, a mini fridge or cooler in the corner, and some stools, and you’re all set! As for the summer drinks, you can’t go wrong with the classic Pimm’s, mojito, and a homemade lemonade or iced tea.

Round-up
Sheds can be turned into a pool house, especially with the right material and setup. For materials, pressure-treated wood is your best bet, while galvanised steel or aluminium works for metal, and PP, PVC, or resin are solid options for plastic.
There are plenty of ways to use a garden room, but a pool changing shed, poolside bar shed, or outdoor shower shed is always a great start.
