Growing your garden - and your gardening skills - is all too simple with a Greenhouse. Grow more plants, vegetables and flowers, and tend to them for longer through the year, with the help of a greenhouse.
Whether you want a full bloom of tomatoes, a spread of leafy vegetables to fill up your salads with, or simply want to try your hand with delicate flowers, a greenhouse can help you level up your growing efforts. Their protected interiors can also be useful stores for your garden tools and growing resources.
With varying designs and sizes, there’s a model out there that suits your demands - from cold-frame growhouses and small greenhouses to full-blown greenhouses.
What Are The Different Greenhouse Variants?
While they may not fit the image of a traditional greenhouse, wooden-framed greenhouses are superb environments for growing and offer some distinct advantages over glass greenhouses.
First, the wooden frame preserves more heat than their metal counterparts do, which means that heat transfer out of the building is reduced - ideal for keeping your plants warm during winter. Timber is also cheaper than metal, and easier to repair, creating a building that is better value for your money and with a longer potential lifespan.
A metal greenhouse is the traditional design - a metal frame with an apex roof and glazing panels. This is a tried and tested design, one that has met the needs of gardeners throughout the centuries.
Metal doesn’t retain heat easily, which can be advantageous during warmer periods of the year when you don’t want the interior getting too hot, however this does mean that temperatures are not retained as efficiently during the winter.
While not a greenhouse by technical standards, a potting shed performs the same function as a greenhouse but with a design that provides less space for growing and more space for different kinds of functionality.
Utilising the shape of a typical garden shed, a potting shed is equipped with glazing on one side to allow in natural light for your growing. The other side of the building can be equipped with effective vertical storage for gardening tools and resources, or with more potting shelves - although they won’t all get as much light as they would in a regular greenhouse.
Growhouses
The smaller cousin to a greenhouse, a “growhouse” or “cold frame” is a small wooden building designed to provide a mini greenhouse environment for your plants. They are compact and there is often no room for anything but the plants that will be growing inside. They're a fantastic space and cost efficient alternative to a greenhouse.
How Do I Maintain a Greenhouse?
This depends partly on the material your greenhouse is made out of, with some maintenance general tips shared between the models.
- If you have a wooden greenhouse, maintaining the timber frame will likely be the most important part. Give your greenhouse regular top-ups of wood paint and treatment, and make sure any damage to the frame is fixed quickly and effectively.
- Metal frames are less maintenance intensive, but you should try to keep their exterior painted as this will reduce the risk of rust forming on the building.
- No matter the frame, ensure the glazing of your building is cleaned regularly and is kept intact. Breakages to the glazing, whether it is glass or the plastic of a polycarbonate greenhouse, means that the seal is broken and heat will be able to escape. Replace any broken glazing as soon as possible, and keep the gaps between frame and glazing tightly sealed.
