Choose the right play house for your child's age - read our Kids' Playhouse Size Guide.
Are Playhouses Safe?
Each children's wooden playhouse is built to EN71 European Safety Standards. A BillyOh wooden playhouse is built for domestic use with toddlers safety in mind. As such our kid's playhouses feature:
- Safety gaps around doors to prevent trapped fingers.
- Safety rails on all raised verandas.
- SAN-glazed shatterproof plastic windows.
- Anti-slip ladders on tower playhouses.
- Be confident in building a shed without plans that's going to stand properly and protect your contents.
A wooden play house is intended for use by toddlers and so our playhouses are not suitable for children aged under 36 months or exceeding a max user weight of 50kg. You can be sure that a BillyOh wooden playhouse UK has been built using high-quality timber crafted by experts.
How to Build a Playhouse?
Start by marking out the proposed site of your children's wooden playhouse. Invite your children to use the space to see if you need a larger or smaller size playhouse (you want to give them enough room whilst creating an intimate space).
Your BillyOh playhouse will arrive in panels of pre-cut tongue and groove timber measured by our expert craftsmen. Simply follow the assembly instructions provided with your order to have your playhouse up in a matter of hours. As for a base, choose a level site and raise your playhouse away from ground moisture with a timber sub-floor, concrete or paving slab, or the easy-fill Ecobase option we offer upon purchase.
How Can a Playhouse Help?
A BillyOh playhouse can ensure that your children have somewhere safe to play in the comfort of your own garden. You'll also have purchased a building with our BillyOh 10-year guarantee against rot, decay, and insect infestation.
But by dedicating a space to play, you can also help your children's development. As well as getting kids outdoors, playhouses and imaginative play have been shown to be instrumental to children's social and mental development. Creative thinking and problem-solving are just some of the soft skills that a playhouse can help cultivate in kids. Plus, having a garden building dedicated to play gives children a sense of autonomy and their own space, whilst allowing you to customise your wooden play and create lifelong memories.
What to Put In a Playhouse?
A kid's playhouse can become whatever you and your children want it to be. Even a cheap wooden playhouse offers lots of opportunity for customisation. Shelving can easily be added to store toys and you can paint and repaint wood for different themes as your children grow.
For example, a log cabin playhouse with an internal bunk opens up loads of opportunities to build a place to naptime, 'sleepovers', or even a reading snug. Whereas, in a tower playhouse, you might kit it out with swashbuckling gear and a captains wheel for the veranda. You could paint the inside of a wooden Wendy house with EN71 or water-based pink paint. That's why we offer a range of trim and wall paint colours upon purchase.
FAQs
This will depend on your available space, the size of your children, and how long you want your playhouse to last. You want to ensure you purchase a playhouse that is big enough for children to grow into without losing intimacy of scale.
As such a playhouse for small children might have a height under 5ft, whereas a 2 story wendy house may exceed 6ft in height. A good way to decide on what size playhouse to buy is to mark out a space in the garden and allow your children to play within it. Adjust it if it’s too big or small whilst they play. For that, and more tips, check out our guide to choosing a playhouse.
One of the main factors to consider is door and ceiling height. After all, you will want your kids to be able to stand up inside their play house for as long as possible. For this height information, be sure to look at the technical specifications of the product you are interested in. We have also made sure to include a handy diagram on the product image galleries.
There are two answers to this. First, if you’ve bought a tower playhouse with a slide, you could use the underneath space as storage or even a garage for kids' cars. On the other hand you might think about installing a foundation or base> under your playhouse. We’d advise against building your playhouse directly on to grass as it can lead to undue pressure on the structure as well as water ingress, damp, and rot.
If you wish to fit a base under your playhouse, then a timber sub-floor, existing patio, paving slabs, concrete slab, or gravel and plastic foundation all work. For more, read this post on preparing your garden for an outdoor building.
The BillyOh playhouses that we offer:
- Aren’t for domestic use
- Don’t exceed a height of 3m high (with a roof more than 4m high) - including an outdoor 2 story playhouse
- Shouldn’t take up more than 50% of your garden
There should be no need to get planning permission as they will fall under ‘permitted development’. If you’re still worried however, you can always check with your local council for up-to-date information.

Types of Garden Playhouses
Log Cabin Playhouse
Give your children their very own log cabin experience. Recognisable by the distinctive interlocking corners of a log cabin build, these playhouses are assembled one log at a time and provide a sturdier, more insulated construction. Browse our log cabin playhouses to see the selection.
Classic Wendy House
For a vintage style of playhouse that harkens back to a bygone era, look no further than outdoor Wendy houses. With their apex roofs and Georgian windows, these buildings excuse an unmatched charm.
Two-Storey Play Houses
Not just any playhouse, but a playhouse with an upstairs! These larger playhouses give your kids even more space to make it their own and get up to all sorts of fun and games. With their multiple room spaces, children can use one area for toys and another for making art. Browse for a two-storey play house to find the right one for your family.
Tower Play House
A tower playhouse adds climbing into the mix by having children ascend a ladder to access it. From their heightened position they will love their elevated view of the garden and the play potential it provides. Will they be a ship’s lookout, or will it be their secret spy watchtower?
To take the play to the next level, add a slide to your tower play house. Browse for a playhouse with a slide to see more awesome ideas.
Building your outdoor play house
All of the products on this page are delivered as wooden playhouse kits, to be assembled at home. This is to be done by grown-ups, involving some basic DIY tools and one other helper.
Once built, you can paint and decorate the playhouse both inside and out. Check out our blog for some really great playhouse decorating ideas.
How long do wooden playhouses last?
Our kids' playhouses come with a 10-year guarantee against rot and insect infestation, as long as they are properly maintained and treated.
Upgrade to include pressure treatment on your child's playhouse, which increases the guarantee to 15 years. Pressure treatment involves the wood going through a machine that forces wood preserver deep into the fibres and increases the lifespan of the timber. Note that pressure treated wood should not be painted until 4-6 months after delivery.
