Which material of shed should I buy?

Each shed material has its own pros and cons and your decision should be based on how you intend to use the building.

Wooden sheds

Wooden sheds are the most popular type of shed, and for good reason.

Pros:
• They look great and can be painted and customised
• They are very durable against wind and rain.
• Wood is naturally insulating against heat and cold.

Cons:
• They are flammable. Not ideal for welding or other blowtorch work.
• They require regular maintenance, including treatment to prevent rot and insect infestation.
• They will always cost more than a metal or plastic equivalent.

Plastic sheds

Don’t underestimate the practical benefits of a plastic shed. They can serve you well for both storage and workshop uses.

• Not flammable.

Cons:
• Difficult to customise without damage.
• Can’t be painted.
• Colour might fade with time.

Metal sheds

For a low cost, low maintenance garden building, look no further than a galvanised metal shed.

Pros:
• Metal sheds are cheaper than wood and plastic sheds.
• They can be painted with specialist metal paint.
• Not much maintenance to do.
• Quality models are resistant to rust.

Cons:
• Can be difficult to customise with add-ons.
• Metal sheds become hot in the summer.
• They are not quite as durable or secure as a wooden shed.

Garden Shed Assembly

We don’t offer assembly with our sheds, but fortunately they are not difficult to build! With some simple tools and one other person to help, you’ll have it up and ready in no time. The product sent to you is a shed building kit of panels, boards and connecting pieces.

In the case of wooden sheds, the walls will usually be pre-assembled panels which are simple to pop up and set into place. However if you have a log cabin shed, these will be individual log planks to slot together, due to the interlocking corners.

To put together a wooden shed, you will need a drill, a hammer, a spirit level, and some screwdrivers. You should also wear gloves to protect from splinters.

Shed Sizes

Our sheds come in a lot of different sizes to suit all kinds of gardens and uses. When choosing what size of shed to buy, you first need to consider how big your garden is and how much space the shed will take up. This is important in order to avoid issues with Planning Permission for Sheds. All our sheds are below the maximum height limit for a permitted development, so as long as you aren’t going to build across more than half of your garden (or in front of your house), then you shouldn’t come across any planning permission issues.

One of the most popular sizes is a 8 x 6 foot shed (choose size after selecting a product). This size offers ample space for storage or small scale workshopping, without taking up a lot of your garden.
